General Daniel Bissell served as commander of Fort Bellefontaine for several years. He returned after his retirement and purchased land through public land sales. His original home is now a Saint Louis County museum.
The Bellefontaine Methodist Church was the only church in Bellefontaine Neighbors in 1950. This church was founded in 1854 when the building was erected on land donated by James R. Bissell, son of General Daniel Bissell. John Clark, a resident of Illinois and a Methodist preacher, risked imprisonment or worse for conducting services at the church while this area was under the control of the Spanish.
Christian Morton attended Riverview Gardens High School, Bellefontaine Neighbors public high school, where he quarterbacked the state champion Riverview Gardens Rams before going on to the University of Illinois and NFL stardom as a cornerback.
