Interesting Facts about Bel Nor, Missouri

The Bel-Nor Exorcist connection

Although the book the Exorcist and the subsequent movie by the same name, one of the highest grossing films of all time,  were works of fiction, many people do not know that the events leading to its publication were based on actual events and many have a Bel Nor and Saint Louis connection.

A boy, commonly referred to as Roland Doe to protect his identity as he was a minor at the time, from Cottage City, Marlyand, a suburb of Washington D.C., was an only child who shared a strong bond and friendship with his Aunt Harriet, a spiritualist and resident of Saint Louis.  It is commonly believed that Aunt Harriet introduced Roland to a Ouija board to contact spirits.  When Roland’s Aunt died suddenly, many believe that he started using the Ouija board to contact her spirit prompting his possession by evil spirits.

Roland started displaying aggressive tendencies and behaviors prompting the boy’s Lutheran minister to suggest they contact Catholic priests to perform the rite of exorcism.  Roland, who had multiple relatives in Saint Louis and who owned a house in Bel-Nor, was sent to Saint Louis to receive the rite after unsuccessful attempts were made in the D.C. area.  Several priests from Saint Louis University exorcised the boy on numerous occasions at a sleepy house on Roanoke Drive in the village of Bel Nor and were ultimately successful in dispelling the demons.  Although there is a “spirited” debate about whether Roland was really possessed by evil spirits, by all accounts Roland grew up to be a happy and well adjusted member of society so the real story has a happy ending.

As many of the sites that prompted the book and subsequent movie have been demolished to make room for urban growth, the Bel-Nor home is one of the last remaining physical remnants of the story.  To see pictures of the house that inspired the book and to find out more information about the story, this article discusses the Bel Nor exorcist connection and this Saint Louis Riverfront Times article goes into more detail about the Bel Nor home that was listed for sale in 2009.
